The reconstruction of Grainger is moving
ahead very well and is on schedule! The installation of the
steel framing will begin this week and you will see the building
take shape very soon.
This week work begins to connect the electrical service as well
as the air conditioning condenser water lines to Grainger. This
requires some of the construction activity to move out from the
Grainger site temporarily. Underground conduits will be
installed from Grainger down Chambers St. behind Blackwell to
connect to the transformer between Blackwell and South Ruffner
that will provide the electricity for Grainger.
In addition to the electrical conduits condenser water lines for
the air conditioning will be installed underground from the
mechanical room in Blackwell (that serves Blackwell, Grainger
and Ruffner) to the cooling tower located between Graham and the
heating plant. The condenser water pipes will be in the same
excavation as the electrical service behind Blackwell. At the
corner of Blackwell they turn south, go down behind Hiner and
Coyner to the entrance behind Graham, and across behind Graham
to the cooling tower.
Beginning 9/10 the portion of Chambers St. behind Blackwell will
be closed so this work may begin. Access to the Tabb
Circle area will remain open at all times through the
Graham/Barlow parking lot. The Graham/Barlow parking lot will
remain open throughout this utility construction period. A lane
will also remain open to allow traffic to continue around Hiner
to Pine St.
Once the work behind Blackwell is complete that area will be
re-opened to traffic and parking. As the work moves down the
street behind Hiner, some of the parking places behind Hiner
will then be closed temporarily to allow for a traffic lane
around the work area as it moves down the street. As the work
passes the west entrance to the Graham/Barlow parking area, that
parking lot will temporarily be accessible only through the
Chambers St. entrance for several days. We know parking is
already limited in this area and every effort will be made to
minimize the number of parking places that are closed during
this time. We will also try to complete this portion of work as
quickly as possible so that the area can be returned to
"normal."
The work in this area will continue for the next four to five
weeks. As work progresses we will continue to post additional
information regarding traffic changes, parking, and the progress
of the work. Again we thank you for your patience during this
period of intense construction. If you have specific questions,
please do not hesitate to
let us know.
