Modernize Heating Plant Phase II

This project will construct a replacement central steam plant.  The plant will provide steam to 98% of the campus.  The new plant will consist of three wood-fired boilers with a rating less than 30,000 lbs of steam per hour, fuel handling storage system, fuel handling system and other support equipment.

Theatre Building

Prior to the Jarman renovation, a new building is planned for construction between Brock Commons and Race Street South of Bedford along Franklin.  It will also accommodate the Communication Studies and Theatre Department when constructed.

Jarman Renovation

Storm Water Control Area / Park

Plans are being considered for a new pond to control the under ground stream that runs through campus and storm water runoff.  Around this pond, a park area will be added.  It will be ideal for studying, picnicking, or the occasional outdoor class.

The Center for Health & Fitness Center

Offices for Student Recreation and Student Health, Wellness, and Counseling. Locker Rooms for Faculty/Staff and Students. Facility is approximately 75,000 square feet. Architects are Moseley Architects from Virginia Beach with Recreation Consultants - Hastings & Chivetta from St. Louis, MO. The facility will be located on the lower Frazer Parking lot.

Athletic Complex - Lacrosse / Field Hockey / Soccer Fields

In an effort to accommodate our move to Division I Athletics, Longwood will be constructing a new set of Athletic fields, press boxes, and bleachers.  The facility will feature an artificial surface for our Lacrosse program as well as a natural surface for our Soccer and Rugby programs.

Baseball/Softball Field Renovation

Improvements to field drainage as well as a new entry gate, access way, field lights and a team room will be additions to the Baseball Field.  The Softball Field will also receive improvements in addition to bleacher, a press box, a new pole for the field lighting, a team room, and entry gate and access way.

Athletic Training Addition

Addition of 3000+ square foot Sports Medicine / Rehabilitation facilities, new air conditioning, seats, and lighting for the basketball court.  A landscaped garden area is also planned as part of the project.  The Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation facilities are necessary to keep our Health, Recreation, and Kinesiology programs certified by having the equipment and training our students require.

The Landings

New Science Building

The New Science Building will be a needed replacement to our current building, Stevens Hall.  It is located on the corner of Griffin Blvd and High Street and will feature new and exciting technologies to be integrated into the classrooms.

Ruffner Reconstruction

The Flagship building of Longwood, Ruffner Hall with its beautiful Rotunda was destroyed by fire during renovation April 24th 2001.  It has been rebuilt in its former splendor with many amenities, and the latest technology.  The classic artwork in the interior of the Rotunda dome has been cleaned and restored.  The addition of a skylight (previously covered) brings new light to the Rotunda's interior.  The Ruffner Re-dedication Website is available here.

Heating Plant Upgrade

The Heating Plant is located at the site of the large smoke stack on campus.  The plant provides much of the steam and heating needs for the campus.  Newer, more efficient equipment will be added.

Longwood Center for the Visual Arts Renovation

The LCVA is the art museum for Longwood University and South Central Virginia. Since 1994 the LCVA has been located on the corner of Third and Main Streets in downtown Farmville (the former home to a Roses Department Store). Most of the operating systems were original to the 1969 structure. During 2002 the LCVA raised funds to support phase I renovation from a variety of constituents. In 2003 Glavé and Holmes developed a facilities master plan.

Brock Commons

Brock Commons has become the central focal point for Longwood and unites the campus community around a safe, pedestrian-friendly environment. The plan provides for full accessibility of all the campus building for all users, while creating an outdoor, collegial ambiance for the entire campus community.  See images of the opening ceremony 4/24/04 here.

Grainger Reconstruction

At the time of the Fire of 2001, Grainger was home to the English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages departments.  It has been rebuilt in its previous place at Longwood.  The rededication ceremony was 8/19/03, take a look here.
