Be a part of History-Sign the Rotunda Rim!

You can be a part of this historic moment by signing the Rotunda rim before the actual event. Any one in the Longwood community who would like to sign the beam should visit the construction site which will be open for this purpose at the following times:

Pre-Signing:
Friday, September 5 from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and
Saturday, September 6 from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

Just come to the main construction entrance on High St. during these times. Longwood University Facilities personnel will be on hand to direct people to the signing location. Pens will be provided, but please sign your name only as space and time will be limited.

Topping-Off Ceremony: Monday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m.

You won't want to miss this. The Dome will be lifted to its permanent location atop the Rotunda structure by a 170-ton crane. Prior to the lift-off, a group of selected representatives from Longwood University, Kuntz Associates Architects, English Construction, and the town of Farmville, will sign the base beam of the rotunda frame structure.

Anyone wishing to attend this historic event should gather on the sidewalk along High St. in front of the construction site just before 11 a.m.

This event will mark another important beginning as we move into the future with a state-of-the-art facility.

The new Science Building is long-awaited and much-needed.  For years, the natural sciences at Longwood have achieved high levels of excellence using the facilities available to them.  With this new building, our science programs will finally have the kind of modern facility they need to support their teaching, learning, and research.

We hope to see you on May 9 as we continue to build a bright future for Longwood University.

1/6/03 Parking Flow Changes around Coyner/Hiner

Amended 1/8/02

My e-mail earlier this week has been misunderstood by some of you and I have been asked to clarify the "traffic flow" changes:

1. You CANNOT drive the wrong way on Pine St.

2. Note that various access areas to specific parking lots may be altered or closed as the project continues.

For example, today Chambers St. has been reopened to allow you to drive to Tabb Circle and Barlow but the lower entrance area to Graham/Barlow is closed. Traffic can drive around the construction up to Chambers St. then drive around to the parking area. The street will be gravel at this point, however the construction fence has been moved back to allow for one lane of traffic.

Also be aware that students have begun to arrive on campus. Parking Regulations will be enforced so DO NOT park in any student parking areas as you may receive a ticket! Naturally if students park out of zone they will also receive tickets.

I regret any misconceptions you may have had and I hope that this will better explain the parking closures.

Efforts are being made to complete the project as quickly as possible so that no one is inconvenienced once the Spring 2003 semester begins. You are welcome to contact me if you have a question and I will be happy to try to answer it!!!

Laura Rice
Parking Services Manager
LUPD

Please note that work on the Ruffner Chiller installation is continuing this week into a heavily used portion of the parking area behind Hiner and Coyner. Parking will be restricted behind Coyner beginning tomorrow (1/7/03). In order to help lessen the burden of this closure to the employees, the direction of the traffic flow on Pine and Chambers St. will be altered to allow access to the Graham and Barlow parking areas.

As the project progresses, expect traffic flow patterns to change. The Facilities Management Dept. is still quite hopeful that the main part of this installation will be completed by Friday (1/10/03), weather permitting. Access WILL be available to South Ruffner and the Tabbs for Spring semester move-in.

Thank you for your continued support of these parking matters. I will keep you posted as information becomes available to me on this project.
