4/24/04 Brock Commons Opens!

Although April 24 is a date that will be remembered for the Great Fire of 2001, it is now forever linked to a more uplifting and festive event - the grand opening and dedication of Brock Commons.

On a sunny day that could have been ordered by the local chamber of commerce, nearly 1,700 people joined in dedicating what President Patricia Cormier called "the most transforming physical feature on Longwood's campus in its 165-year history."

A story and comprehensive photo gallery have now been posted on the Longwood web site.

The fences are coming down. The fountains are flowing. And the grass is getting greener. All of the reviews by State agencies are complete and we have passed with flying colors. It's been a long time coming, but we are pleased to announce the opening of Brock Commons.

The official dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24. We hope you will join us for a grand celebration and picnic. Brock Commons has literally transformed the face of our campus and soon will become the central focal point of Longwood University

Brock Commons is the result of a $3 million gift from Macon F. and Joan Perry Brock, '64, of Virginia Beach-the largest capital gift in the history of Longwood. The generosity of the Brocks has created one of the most prominent and beautiful features of Longwood University. Trees, plants, and grass have replaced asphalt and curbs in the heart of the campus. Two fountains, a pavilion and a colonnade complement a large tiered plaza that occupies what had been a busy intersection. Underneath it all is a much-awaited 142-space parking garage.

In order to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all there will be certain restrictions on Brock Commons:

  • Skateboarding will not be allowed on the Commons, but bicycles will be permitted;
  • Motorized vehicles will not be allowed on the Commons unless approved by the Chief of Police;
  • Smoking will not be allowed on the Commons;
  • Vendors will not be allowed on the Commons, but will be allowed behind the Lankford Student Union if approved by the Office of Student Affairs.

The underground parking garage will be available to faculty and staff beginning on Sunday, April 25.

Over the summer, we will complete the last phase of Brock Commons by replacing the street areas of Pine and Madison Street with lawns, trees, and sidewalks. This extension of Brock Commons will complete the promenade from High Street all the way to the Hull Education Center.

We hope to see you soon on Brock Commons.

Longwood to close Madison Street to through traffic

Farmville--Due to ongoing construction projects and safety concerns, Longwood University will close Madison Street to through traffic effective Wednesday, March 10. Parking lots behind Coyner/Hiner and the Jarman lot will still be accessible to faculty and staff. According to Longwood’s Chief of Police Charles Lowe, "We are concerned about the safety of our students and employees. Madison Street is heavily used by pedestrians, especially students, and we need to take steps now to avoid an accident later." Madison Street was already scheduled to be closed to through traffic as the Brock Commons project nears completion.

12/2/03 Lot Behind Graham Closed Temporarily

The F/S parking lot located behind the Graham Building will be closed all day on Thursday, December 4, 2003. This closure is due to preliminary work necessary for the steam plant upgrade.  Those of you storing cushman-golf cart vehicles in this area may wish to remove them Wednesday afternoon.  The lot will reopen on Friday.  Thanks!

11/17/03 New Science Building / Wheeler Mall

This week work will begin on Wheeler Mall to connect the underground sanitary sewer for the new Science Building. This is the final piece of "digging" that has to happen on Wheeler Mall prior to Commencement 2004.

This work involves additional digging in the area beside the Jarman parking lot and will take about a week to complete. We will then begin immediately to restore the portion of Wheeler Mall that has been "dug up" by the new Science Building construction. The fence will be moved back beyond the sidewalk and everything south of the sidewalk from Jarman to the north door of Wheeler (including the steps) will be restored and grass will be planted. Wheeler Mall will be green once again for Commencement 2004 next May!

Thanks for your patience during this construction.

Director of Facilities Management

10/3/03 Brock Commons Celebration Delayed

We are so disappointed to have to inform you that the celebration for the end of a turning point: The Campaign for Longwood and the dedication of Brock Commons is going to have to be postponed. It will NOT take place on November 8.

As you know, Hurricane Isabel visited Longwood University on September 18, contributing to a total of 10 inches of rain in September. While most of the campus suffered minimal damage during the hurricane, the Brock Commons project, already behind schedule due to an extraordinarily wet spring and summer, has been delayed to the point that we are not comfortable with continuing with such a significant event when the completion date is in doubt.

THANK YOU for your enthusiasm for the event and please accept our apologies for the scheduling inconveniences that we may have caused you. We look forward to putting on an event that will WOW our guests and campus community in the spring and hope you will join us then.

9/12/03 New Science Building Impact Notice

The construction of the new Science Building is now a reality. The project will take about 18 months to complete and the building will open for use when the fall semester begins in 2005.

The first and most immediate impact of this construction project is the installation of the underground utilities that will serve the building---storm drains, sewer, water and steam lines need to be connected to the building. The construction fence has been placed into Wheeler Mall and close to the north end of Wheeler Residence Hall to allow for this portion of the work. The construction of the underground utilities will be completed by October 1. At that time the lawn areas will be restored and re-seeded, the demolished sidewalk sections replaced and THE FENCE WILL BE MOVED BACK TO THE NORTH SIDE OF WHEELER MALL. The steps and sidewalk along the north side of Wheeler Mall will reopen for use at that time.

On the north side of Wheeler Residence Hall, a temporary sidewalk will be built connecting the sidewalk in front of Wheeler to Griffin Blvd. in order to accommodate campus pedestrian traffic to and from Griffin Blvd. This temporary sidewalk will remain outside the construction fence for the duration of the project. The temporary sidewalk is scheduled to be complete by Monday morning, September 15.

Many of you have asked about the impact of this construction on Commencement 2004. Longwood University's 2004 graduation ceremony will be held in the traditional location on Wheeler Mall. A plan is currently being developed to reconfigure and expand the seating for commencement in order to provide for those seats formerly located on the site of the new science building.

As always, thank you for your cooperation and patience as we move forward with this important addition to our campus.

C. Brent Douglass,
Director of Facilities Management

9-8-03 Ruffner's Rotunda Dome Set Into Place

After a slight delay, a large crowd of Longwood faculty staff, students, and friends watched as a large crane lifted the Rotunda back up on top of Main Ruffner Hall.  Cheers arose from the crowd as the dome was set into place, marking one of the highlights of the post fire reconstruction.

The Rotunda is lifted into place by a large crane.
