The Division of Professional Studies (DOPS) provides access to educational resources for the people of Virginia and the extended community.
Professional Studies courses at Longwood University are for-credit classes open to individuals who may be interested in professional development, enhancing skills and knowledge, fulfilling recertification or certification requirements in their career field, or taking prerequisites before entering a degree program.
We offer courses throughout the year in a variety of formats such as fully online, hybrid (online with several in-person meetings), or fully face-to-face.
Although professional studies courses carry university credit, they do not fulfill degree requirements. Taking courses as a non-degree student does not constitute admission to a program or imply later applicability of these courses toward a program. If you later seek admission to a degree program here or at another university, courses with non-degree (professional studies) status could possibly be evaluated to determine applicability to the degree you seek.

This course provides a foundation to the scope and nature of education in American society as reflected in the historical, philosophical, and sociological forces affecting the development and organization of schooling. Emphasis is given to contemporary cultural issues impacting teaching and learning in a diverse society.

Examination of classroom and behavior management techniques and the development of skills necessary to foster a supportive classroom learning environment congruent with norms and rules. Includes an examination of system problems and solutions within traditional and alternative education settings. Includes a variety of behavioral, cognitive and theoretical approaches that are developmentally appropriate. Designed for practicing regular education teachers or for licensure in PreK-12 classrooms.

Teaching Mathematics with Children’s Literature Children’s literature as a vehicle for teaching mathematics concepts, increasing mathematical language and writing, and enjoying real world math situations is the focus of this course. You will explore a variety of children’s books that can be used to teach concepts in geometry, pattern, number, data and statistics, measurement and problem-solving. Lesson ideas will be discussed, and participants will develop their own lesson as well as compile a bibliography of math-related literature pertinent to their grade level curriculum objectives. This course focuses mostly on K-6 books and mathematics concepts but can be very helpful for upper-grade remediation, special education, and concept reinforcement. Useful for teachers, school library media specialists, reading specialists, math specialists, homeschool instructors.

This course is designed to develop thinking and facilitation skills to improve effectiveness in team problem solving and individual problem solving that require creativity for an optimal solution. It is designed to introduce several creative problem solving (CPS) models, divergent and convergent thinking techniques, and organizational skills used in problem-solving sessions.
