Ally Zone at Longwood University
What is an ally? Washington and Evans (1991) define an ally as "a person who is a member of the dominant or majority group who works to end oppression in his or her personal and professional life through support of, and as an advocate with and for, the oppressed population" (p.195). Purpose & Goals of the Ally Zone Program Purpose: To create a safer and more affirming campus climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning students through the development and support of a network of allies who offer education, support, and resources on LGBTQ issues to the university community. Goals: * Provide accurate information/education about LGBTQ issues regarding LGBTQ-affirming language, relevant Longwood University policies and procedures * Address common anti-LGBTQ myths and stereotypes * Aid faculty, staff, students in developing the skills needed to become be an ally *Create a safer and more LGBTQ-affirming campus climate
This two-hour training program is offered each semester and is co-sponsored by the Counseling Center, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and Unity Alliance. Upon completion of the training program, participants sign the Ally Zone contract to indicate their commitment to providing a safe, supportive, affirming environment for LGBTQ students and to educating others on LGBTQ issues.
