What can you expect during your initial visit?
When
you arrive, you will encounter a warm and accepting environment. You will
be asked to fill out a basic information form, and have an
opportunity to read about your rights and responsibilities. You will then meet with a counselor for approximately 50
minutes. This meeting is a time for you to share your story about what
brought you to the Counseling Center. During this time, the counselor will
ask you questions that will help clarify your situation. He/she may
elicit background information about you as well as information about your
current life. Near the end of the meeting you and the counselor will
decide whether there is an agreed upon need for counseling and what goals you
will want to achieve.
COST:
There is no charge for any Counseling Center service.
WHO CAN USE THE SERVICES:
The Counseling Center is available to all students enrolled at Longwood
University. Consultation and referral services are available for faculty and
staff.
CONFIDENTIALITY:
The information you share in a counseling session will be treated with the
highest regard for confidentiality. This means that information will not
be disclosed to any outside persons or agencies without your written
permission. The primary exception to this could be if, in the judgment of
the counselor, such a disclosure was necessary to protect you or someone else
from danger.
