Client Rights and Responsibilities
1. CLIENT RIGHTS
Counseling is confidential. Information shared by
you in a counseling session or through testing will be treated with the highest
regard for confidentiality. This means that information will not be
disclosed to any outside persons or agencies without written
permission. The only exception to this would be if, in the judgment of the
counselor, such a disclosure were necessary to protect you or someone else from
imminent danger. The counselor is required by law to disclose information
when any of the following are present: (a) reasonable suspicion of abuse
of children or elderly persons, (b) the client presents a serious danger to
another, or (c) the client is likely to harm himself/herself unless protective
measures are taken.
The counselor can be expected to respect you as an
individual and to convey this respect by keeping appointments or contacting you
if a change is necessary, by giving you complete attention during sessions, and
by providing the most effective counseling she/he can.
Counselors consider many issues while attempting to
provide effective services. Concern for progress includes considering how
often you meet, how long you meet, what you want to accomplish, and the progress
being made. Also, they will assist you in learning about other services
available at Longwood and elsewhere in the community. You are encouraged
to discuss with your counselor your feelings about the counseling and advantages
of other services.
II. CLIENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Active participation in the counseling process is
important for progress.
Keeping appointments will allow you to take full advantage
of the service. Once your appointment has been scheduled, it is your
responsibility to keep the appointment. If for any reason you are unable
to keep your appointment, you are asked to call the Counseling Center. We
would appreciate as much advanced notice as possible, preferably 24 hours prior
to your appointment time. Please do not e-mail the Counseling Center - call
(434) 395 2409 instead.
Deciding when to end is part of the counseling
process. You are encouraged to discuss this with your counselor.
III. GENERAL INFORMATION
At the end of the semester, you will receive a brief
evaluation questionnaire. This is routinely done to evaluate our services
in a constant effort to maintain quality and to address client
concerns/feedback. We will appreciate your responses and your responses will
remain anonymous unless you provide your name on the form.
