Email to Students Regarding Area Storms [09.04.08]

Hurricane season is upon us and Longwood University is tracking several storms in the Atlantic.   In case one of these storms approaches central Virginia, we will be communicating with you via e-mail, text-messaging, and online.  Be sure to monitor storm tracks through broadcast news media and online news outlets for the latest updates.


IN CASE A STORM APPROACHES LONGWOOD

If a hurricane is headed our way, there are some things you can do to prepare beforehand, but first some definitions:

Tropical Storm Watch
An alert that a tropical storm might pose a threat within 36 hours

Tropical Storm Warning
An alert that tropical storm conditions, including sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph, are expected within 24 hours

Hurricane Watch
Hurricane conditions are possible in specified area usually within 36 hours

Hurricane Warning
Hurricane conditions are expected in the specified area within 24 hours


THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE

  • Be sure to keep your parents and family informed
  • Sign up for Longwood Text-Messaging and E-mail alerts.
  • If applicable, bring inside any lawn furniture, outdoor decorations or ornaments, trash cans, hanging plants, and anything else that can be picked up by the wind.
  • Fill your car's gas tank.
  • Check batteries and make sure you have a flashlight, portable radio
  • Stock up on non-perishable food items—snacks, health bars, water, etc.
  • Refill prescription medications that may be running low
