How do I Request Accommodations? Disclosure of disabilities is voluntary; however, in order to ensure equal access to programs and services, students are encouraged to contact the Office of Disability Services and to provide appropriate professional documentation of a disability. Longwood has the right to verify the disability. Students are required to request accommodations through Disability Services in order to receive such accommodations. The following procedure should ensure that you receive the appropriate and reasonable accommodations that will assist you in gaining equal access: 1. As early in the semester as possible you should initiate contact with the Office of Disability Services to request accommodations. At this time, you should provide Disability Services with current documentation regarding your disability. the documentation must state the diagnosis and explain how the disability substantially limits you. Please visit the disability specific web sites for further information on your disability. 2. You should plan on meeting with someone in Disability Services at the beginning of each semester to request accommodations and review how the disability effects you. 3. At your meeting in the beginning of the semester, we will explore appropriate and reasonable accommodations that you may choose to use in a particular context. Recommendations from documentation and consultation with the student are both used to determine accommodations. Final determination of accommodations rests with the college. 4. You will be provided with Faculty Accommodation letters to give to each of your instructors. You should make appointments with each instructor as early in the semester as possible to let them know of your accommodation needs and discuss how accommodations will be provided. 5. If you are a continuing
student, you should come in and fill out the appropriate paperwork for
continuing accommodations such as books on tape, note takers and tutors, as well
as signing your Accommodation Plan for the next semester. 6. If difficulties occur in the actual provision of approved accommodations and you are unsuccessful in resolving those issues, they you may appeal to Disability Services and request assistance with securing the appropriate accommodations. Disability Services will work with both the student and the faculty member or department to arrive at an appropriate resolution.
