Face the world on a broad, solid footing.

This major is the backbone of becoming a successful teacher and professional. Most of our students prepare to be elementary and/or middle school teachers and are consistently hired to teach in Virginia public schools.

What You'll Study

Education and Teaching Major

We have several pathways that lead to teaching licensure in Virginia.

Elementary School Licensure

If you dream of teaching our youngest future citizen leaders this is the place to be.

Elementary/ Middle School Licensure

Elementary/Middle school teachers bridge the gap between elementary and high school. You'll help prepare young minds to determine their own path when they hit high school.

Special Education Licensure

Longwood's Special Education program is a five-year pathway to becoming a licensed special education teacher. You'll have all the tools, experience and knowledge to ensure your success teaching general curriculum to Kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Students completing this pathway would earn a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies though the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences at the undergraduate level.

In addition to the multidisciplinary General Education requirements, Education Studies students take advanced courses in English, Mathematics, Natural Science and Social Science.
