Edgar Allan Poe

Born:  January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts

Died:  Sunday, October 7, 1849

Education: University of Virginia (1826),

Tie to Virginia:  He traveled to England (1815-20) where he attended Manor School at Stoke Newington, and then University of Virginia (1826).  He also lived and worked in Virginia before heading north.  Also, the Poe Museum is located in Richmond.

A Few Interesting Facts:

• Both of his real parents died before he was three years old.
• His foster father (it was never a legal adoption) disowned him after arguing about his gambling debts (which forced him to leave UVA).
• He is credited with nearly inventing the detective story.
• Poe enlisted in the army for two years under the name Edgar A. Perry
• His exact cause of death still remains of a mystery.
