Longwood University Black Alumni Weekend was created to lay the groundwork for a substantive connection between alumni and its current body with the goal of promoting academic achievement, retention and increased graduation rates for minority students. This year's theme is "Reclaiming our past, reaffirming our future, and preserving our legacy." Events include meet and greet opportunities, social activities, speed networking and mentoring sessions, featured speakers, a tour of Moton Museum and Town Hall meeting with BASIC Combined Choir Performance. Registration costs: $25 for alumni and $5 for students. Proceeds and registration fees will assist with planning events for the Longwood University Black Alumni Reunion Weekend and the Longwood University Black Alumni Scholarship fund.
Join us at the Longwood Cabin on Friday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m. for a free screening of the chilling horror film "Trick r' Treat".
Trick 'r Treat is a 2007 American anthology written and directed by Michael Dougherty and produced by Bryan Singer. The film stars Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin and Brian Cox. It relates four Halloween horror stories with a common element in them, Sam; a mysterious child trick-or-treater wearing shabby orange footie pajamas with a burlap sack over his head. The character makes an appearance in each of the stories whenever a character breaks Halloween traditions.
The event will begin at 7pm with an introduction and discussion led by the Cabin Film Series Guest Curator, Dr. Chris McGee.

Contemporary art, interdisciplinary research communities, and traditional Appalachian culture converge in "Rural Avant-Garde: The Mountain Lake Experience," an exhibition showcasing the collaborative creative works that emerged the Mountain Lake Workshop series, which spanned four decades.
The exhibition will be on view November 16, 2019 – March 8, 2020, with an opening reception on November 15 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue (published by Longwood University in association with the University of Virginia Press) provide an important record of MLW within the context of contemporary creative practice. Complementary programs, carefully structured to replicate the dynamic, collaborative explorations that MLW nurtured, will provide important context for these nationally significant experimental art happenings.

Join the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts on Wednesday, November 20th at 6:00 p.m. for an exclusive gallery talk with Mountain Lake Workshop founders Ray Kass and Howard Risatti. The Mountain Lake Workshop (MLW) had its origins in a series of conferences that began in 1980. These conferences, held at the Mountain Lake Lodge, best known as the resort where the motion picture Dirty Dancing was filmed, evolved into an ongoing art project that draws upon the resources of the New River Valley and Appalachian region of Southwest Virginia.
