The concentration in community and college counseling prepares students to be professional counselors in community agencies or in college settings. Students are provided with advanced clinical skills and learning theories, techniques of counseling, and intervention strategies. Completion of the degree qualifies students for jobs in community mental health, social services, court services, rehabilitation agencies, counseling centers, student affairs offices, youth development services, and residence halls. A teaching license is not required for this program.

Students are cautioned to work closely with their advisers in planning their studies since some courses have prerequisites and are sequenced to begin with the fall semester.

Students interested in pursuing licensure as professional counselor are advised to obtain and adhere to the regulations of the Virginia Board of Counseling.
