Message from the Dean

Longwood University has educated Virginia undergraduates since 1839 with graduate education beginning in 1954. Longwood is known for its quality graduate programs and quality graduates who are in high demand in education and professional settings.

Longwood has expanded its graduate offerings that now include Master's degrees in Education, Business Administration, Sociology/Criminal Justice, English, and Communication Sciences and Disorders. These five degree majors include 28 degree programs and 4 licensure-only programs. Graduate programs are flexibly scheduled with the adult student in mind: evening and weekend classes, locations around the Commonwealth of Virginia, and a growing list of online courses and programs.

The Master of Science in Education emphasizes field experiences, as well as advanced training, in fifteen areas of concentration. Offerings include initial licensure programs in Elementary Education, Special Education, School Library Media, and Modern Languages, including English as a Second Language, for those without a teacher's license. For licensed teachers there are endorsement programs in Educational Leadership, Elementary Education, K-8 Mathematics, Literacy and Culture (Reading Specialist/Coach), Modern Languages Music, School Library Media, and Special Education. Community and College Counseling and Guidance and Counseling programs are also available. Courses are offered in many off-campus locations including the Southside Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston, the Longwood Powhatan Center, the Retail Merchants Association Building in or near Richmond and in many school divisions around the state.

Summer Spanish Language Institutes are offered each summer in places such as Mérida, Venezuela, or Valencia, Spain.

The Master of Science in Sociology/Criminal Justice is offered at the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy in Lynchburg. In addition, a certificate in Social Policy and Administration is available.

The Master of Arts in English has four concentrations: Creative Writing, English Education & Writing, Literature, and 6-12 initial licensure.

The MBA program has three concentrations, Accounting, General Business and Retail Management with classes offered on-campus and at the Longwood Retail University Center in Richmond.

The Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders includes an on-campus Master's program as well as two online programs. The SLPOnline program offers the eight undergraduate courses required to be eligible for admission to a Master's program. It is designed for career switchers. The online Master's program is a collaborative program with three other Virginia universities, each of whom admits six students into an online cohort of 24 students who are instructed by professors from each of the four institutions. The online students are required to come to campus in the summer to participate in a clinical practicum.

To discover the power in you to increase your knowledge and skills, to prepare for a career change or new professional challenge, or to continue your life-long learning, choose Longwood Graduate Studies, a stable, quality choice for more than 50 years.
