The M.A. in English literature is among the most versatile of graduate programs, providing students with the opportunity to explore a variety of literatures, or a specific period, genre, and/or author in American or British Literature. The degree prepares students for careers in nearly all areas of business, or further graduate study, and helps educators seeking more in-depth content area study to enhance their current position or expand their teaching opportunities to post-secondary institutions such as community colleges or teaching schools. The English literature M.A. also provides the academic foundation for students planning to pursue a Ph.D., and gives them the opportunity to engage in the scholarly research and writing necessary to prepare for that degree. Through literary studies, students become well informed about human behavior and relationships, an understanding that is crucial - and transferable - to business, professional, and academic environments. Admission Students admitted to the literature concentration are expected to have an undergraduate major in English with a minimum of 30 hours of literature. Consideration will be given to those having an English minor (a minimum of 18 hours), depending on the courses taken, but more undergraduate preparation may be required at the discretion of the departmental graduate committee. Culmination This program requires the writing of a thesis and an oral defense.
