Activities for Graduate Students The Department of English and Modern Languages offers study abroad courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. These courses generally run during the summer sessions, beginning in May. Most of these courses are two-week study abroad courses with online components after the trip. Further information about study abroad programs can be found at: http://www.longwood.edu/studyabroad/Registration for these courses is done through the course professor and usually begins at the beginning of the fall semester to insure participation and secure deposits for travel. Coming in May 2009: ENGL 444/544 Literature and Culture: Anglo-Saxon England taught by Dr. Larissa Tracy, tracylc@longwood.edu This course is designed to teach Anglo-Saxon literature in the context of its history, language and culture, and explore the evolution of Anglo-Saxon literature and culture through the early Middle English period. This course is also designed to emphasize the close analysis of texts, including poetry, fiction and drama written during the Anglo-Saxon and early Middle English period. Students should be able to read for comprehension, detail and nuance; demonstrate an attention to the literary qualities of language; do a close reading of the texts; analyze the ways specific literary devices contribute to the meaning of a text; and write critical papers that use the skills developed above to support a claim about a text. As a study abroad course, this class will focus on reading the texts, and discussing them onsite and in context and analyzing their cultural impact on English literature as a whole. There will be some instruction in the Anglo-Saxon language, but all texts will be read in translation. Graduate students will be required to present on specific material on site at a location of their choice during the trip. Trip highlights include: Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury town, Hastings Battle Field and Abbey, Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, Winchester, Windsor Castle, free days in London including the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the British Museum. Deposits of $500 are in to Longwood Cashiering by Oct. 1, 2008. For further information contact Dr. Larissa Tracy, tracylc@longwood.edu Site Last Updated: 7-31-2008 |
