The University's newest project, the Health & Fitness Center, is the first Longwood construction the gain LEEDS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. It earned a "Gold" rating based on well-founded scientific standards, LEED emphasizes state of the art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. In order to obtain certification, the University is working with the architect and contractor throughout every level of design and construction to ensure the following things:

• Construction waste is minimized and separated correctly
• Recycled and recyclable materials are used in great amounts
• Building materials are manufactured within 100 miles of the construction site whenever possible
• Mechanical equipment is wrapped for energy-efficiency and stored off the ground.
