1. What services do you offer?
   • The Student Health and Wellness Center offers both clinical and health education services.  We treat acute problems such as bronchitis, ear infections, strep throat, flu, mono, urinary infections, sexually transmitted infections, headaches, allergy symptoms, skin rashes, colds, pinkeye, minor burns, depression, and anxiety.
   • Wellness Wednesdays! This year we are offering chair massages every Wednesday in the Student Health & Wellness Center!  Click here for more information.
   • We also offer health education programming for the residence halls, organizations and individuals; some examples include substance abuse, tobacco use/smoking cessation, eating disorders, sexual health, and stress management.

2. Who will I see if I come to the Health and Wellness Center?
   • Advanced Practice Clinicians (nurse practitioners, and physician assistants)assess and treat many common acute health conditions affecting the college health population, which may also be seen in a family physician's office. In Virginia, Advanced Practice Clinicians can prescribe medications. Some health problems will be referred to the emergency department or a local physician or health care specialist.  For example, severe abdominal pain, severe asthma attacks, fractures, dental problems, eye problems, etc... Clinicians consult with the University Medical Director.
   • A Certified Health Education Specialist serves as the Wellness Coordinator. This individual can provide advice and education on issues such as stress, substance abuse, tobacco use/smoking cessation, eating disorders, and other issues related to college health promotion and education.

3. Do I need an appointment?
   • YES! In order to see a clinician, you need to call 434-395-2102 to schedule an appointment.

4. How much will it cost me to see a clinician?
   • The Student Health fee is automatically included in the comprehensive fee collected with your tuition at the beginning of the semester. There is no charge to see a clinician. However, prescriptions, visits to the emergency department or other health providers, hospitalization, nebulizer treatments, injections, and laboratory tests etc...are the student's responsibility.

5. Does the university have an insurance policy that I can purchase?
   • The University does NOT have it's own insurance policy that students can purchase.  For a complete list of providers that DO insure Longwood students, please click here.

6. Do you write "excuses" for missed classes or employment?
7. Who do I talk to about air purification? Is there a form I will need?
   • The Student Health and Wellness Center does NOT write medical excuses.  We will document illness in very limited instances:
     • Locally hospitalized students
     • Students who are sent home by the Health and Wellness Center (i.e. communicable disease)
     • Students who are told by our clinicians to go on bed rest or to limit physical activity. Documentation is not given without the student's written consent.

8. What do I do if I have an emergency?

9. Can I get involved with the Health and Wellness Center?

10. Are my visits to the Health and Wellness Center confidential?
    • No one has access to your records without written permission from you. The only exception would be by law. If parents or faculty call, information cannot be shared with the student's written consent. ALL visits made to the Student Health and Wellness Center are kept strictly confidential.

11. Do you give allergy shots?
    • Allergy clinics are available for a fee, click here for details. Students requiring allergy shots are responsible for providing their serum and medial order from their doctor.

14. Who is Eligible to Use the Health and Wellness Center?
    • Enrolled students with a complete certificate of immunization on file. Students are seen for health problems/ concerns by appointment. Call 434-395-2102 for an appointment with a nurse practitioner or health educator.

16. What Should I Do if I Am Referred to Another Healthcare Provider?
    • Check with your insurance company to ensure coverage.
    • Take your insurance card with you to your appointment.
    • Arrange for transportation.

The Student Health fee is automatically included in the comprehensive fee collected with your tuition at the beginning of the semester; there is no charge to see the clinician. However, prescriptions, visits to the emergency department or other health providers, hospitalization, and laboratory tests are at the students expense.
