Smartphones at Longwood

Smartphones have become a very popular portable tool for email and calendaring. IITS offers mobile messaging capabilities via a Blackberry Enterprise Server.

What devices are supported?

Support is provided for Blackberry devices only.

Who is permitted to connect to Longwood's Blackberry server?

Faculty and staff using Longwood owned or personally owned Blackberries are permitted to connect to the Blackberry server. A one time licensing fee of $100 and an annual maintenance and renewal fee of $25 will apply. Licensing and renewal charges for a Longwood owned device will be the responsibility of the department. Charges for a personally owned device will be the responsibility of the individual user. A budget code will be required for departmental billing. Personal charges will be billed to the LancerNet account.

What are the requirements/expectations for users when using Longwood's Blackberry server?

ALL users of Longwood's Blackberry server (Longwood owned and persoanlly owned devices), are subject to Longwood's mobile computing policies. Users must complete a release form agreeing to abide by the following policies:

  • PIN - A PIN (4 character minimum) must be set on the device. This PIN can be changed at anytime. Ten invalid attempts at entering a PIN will result in lock out and a complete wipe of all data on the device. NOTE: A warning is displayed on the 9th attempt.
  • Idle Timeout - Devices will time timeout/lock after 15 minutes of inactivity. Once locked, the PIN will have to be entered to access the device.
  • Prepended Messages - All email messages sent from a Blackberry will be prepended with "Sent from my Blackberry".
  • Lost or Stolen Devices - Lost or stolen devices MUST be reported to User Support Services, Information Security, or Campus Police (outside of regular business hours) immediately. ALL data (files, contact lists, etc.) on lost or stolen devices will be remotely wiped by IITS.
  • Devices will be wiped by IITS in the event that the user is no longer employed by the University or if the device (Longwood owned) is transferred to another user. NOTE: Phone service will need to be reestablished  with your carrier after the wipe is complete.
