Jamestowne Society Research Project
The Department of History and Political Science has secured an on-going grant (beginning in 1998) from Mr. Robert N. Hendry, Governor Emeritas of the Jamestowne Society, for students to undertake detailed research into the sources for a classic book on Virginia's history--Mary Stanard's Virginia's First Century, published in 1928. Mrs. Stanard died before completing the footnotes to her book. Each semester one or two of our students are engaged in finding those sources and assisting in the preparation of an edited version of the book to be published by 2007, the 400th anniversary of the Jamestowne colony.  Mr. Hendry has made these generous grants in memory of the deceased members of the First North Carolina Company of the Jamestowne Society. Historic Homes of Prince Edward County
Beginning in 2000, student interns will conduct research on historic homes in the area. Dr. Deborah Welch plans for her students to write a book on historic homes in Prince Edward County.  Building on the work of student interns on the Village View Plantation project described above, Dr. Welch's students will be developing a large website for showcasing historic homes in the county (a project that could grow to cover the Southside region) and writing an attractive book about such homes.  We hope to raise private funds to support these efforts and that the results will be of use to local tourism and a source of regional pride as the University begins a rural studies program. The students will be coordinating their work with the Prince Edward County Historical Society.  The plan is for this on-going project to be completed in time for the County's two hundred fiftieth anniversary of founding in 2004. Lynchburg City Hall
During the Fall 1998 semester, Will Carwile, Senior Political Science major, worked in a 16-credit internship with Lynchburg City Hall, working with the Assistant City Manager in Organization Development as a Management Analyst.  While working with the city he was involved in a variety of issues.  He joined the steering and planning committee for a regional visioning process.  The name of the organization is "Regional Renaissance."  He prepared the budget for this group wrote letters to several foundations inquiring about financial support for the organization.  He also developed an application for a grant from PriceWaterhouse Coopers to gain support for a community change project associated with Regional Renaissance. He has also designed and completed a benchmark study on educational assistance.  The purpose of the study was to determine the competitiveness of Lynchburg's educational assistance program as compared to others and to learn about incentives and innovations related to the use of educational assistance.  The findings of this study revealed that Lynchburg City's rate for tuition assistance is dramatically behind that of local business.  This report was presented to the executive staff at their monthly meeting as part of a comprehensive report that was aimed at gaining support for a new and innovative 3-year program where Virginia Tech would partner with the City offering city employees the opportunity to get an MPA while at work. He also worked as the project coordinator for this program.  He also worked with the Code Enforcement Task Force.  This is a group of city employees from a number departments charged with making sure that city code violations are dealt with throughout all communities.  A few other items that he worked on are as follows: reviewed and developed an administrative policy format for the City of Lynchburg; designed a "CollegeWorks" program to facilitate the use of college interns
by City departments; and assisted in a project designed to implement an automated customer service tracking system. He gained a broad knowledge of public administration, including city
departments/operations and public policy issues. After graduation Will got a job with the city, but has since accepted a better offer with a computer programming firm.
