The Culture of Gardens

 Garden of Eden

The Cormier Honors College Vegetable Garden is designed to emphasize not only the production of food but also the aesthetic and metaphysical context of gardening throughout history. From the Garden of Eden in Biblical history, to the Hanging Gardens of Semiramis in present-day Iraq, to the Japanese Zen garden, to the Mughal garden of the Taj Mahal, and the formal French garden of more modern times, plants have been used to embody cultural values and to inspire an appreciation of the natural world. The design of Longwood's garden will change in future semesters as we incorporate learning from other cultures.
