Prospective Students

Why apply to be part of the Longwood University Honors Program?

If you were to ask other colleges, most would give you their generic answers: “The honors program is a place for academically gifted and talented students who want more out of their education,” or “The honors program offers challenging courses to help expand your mind.”

Yes, the Honors Program at Longwood University is a place for exceptional students and does offer challenging courses, but that only gives you a limited view of the program.   The Longwood University Honors Program focuses on community.  The program strives to create an academic community that is sustained through the drive and ambition of its student members.  The support that comes from this group of people is what makes the program unique.

That sense of community is woven into every aspect of the Honors Program.  For example, the community is strengthened through honors courses.  Honors courses are small and involve extensive interaction with faculty.  Instead of focusing on the accumulation and memorization of facts, these courses have an emphasis on demonstrating an understanding of the material.  Another example is Wheeler, the residence hall that houses the honors students.  Through events, seminars, and other happenings in the residence hall, the community is strengthened.
