Opening Up Career Opportunities

Longwood University's Health, Athletic Training, Recreation, and Kinesiology (HARK) Department offers exciting and challenging career opportunities for undergraduates. Earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical & Health Education Teacher Education (PHETE) can lead to career choices in teaching on all school levels, PK-12.

Members of the PHETE faculty are contacted regularly by principals and school superintendents from throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia who are interested in recruiting our graduates. A Longwood PHETE graduate is very marketable. To improve that marketability even more, the HARK Department offers both classes required for an endorsement in Drivers' Education. This endorsement is encouraged of all PHETE majors, especially those interested in teaching health and physical education on the secondary level. In addition, the HARK Department offers a minor in coaching. These two options, though not required, provide additional career options for our graduates.

Preparing the Best and Most Qualified Teachers

PHETE majors receive excellent preparation for their PK-12 licensure. In addition to the content courses basic to the disciplines of health and physical education, our teacher candidates complete four distinct methods courses. Extensive fieldwork supplements each of these courses. Our teacher candidates are in the schools to teach lessons in health education, physical education (elementary, middle and high school), adapted physical education, and also organize and implement an after school program at Prince Edward County Middle School. Our students take the theory from the classroom and use it in the real world. Extensive coursework combined with these field placements and student teaching on the elementary and secondary levels enable our graduates to enter the profession of teaching ready to make a difference.

The PHETE faculty is committed to preparing the best prepared health and physical education teachers. Individual attention is provided as the teacher candidate moves through courses, practicum experiences, and student teaching to join the ranks of some of the best prepared teachers in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

One of our alumni said it best:

"From the moment you step into Willett Hall, the professors do their best to prepare you for life. You enter as a student and truly leave as a teacher, with a great support group of teachers and peers, who are always willing to help. If I had to choose one word to describe the atmosphere in the PHETE program, it would be 'Exciting', the students are excited to learn, and the professors are excited to teach."
