I choose Therapeutic Recreation because I knew I could not sit behind a desk at an unrewarding job.  I am a hands on person, and like to help people, that is exactly what Recreation Therapist do.  I can use my creativity and desire to improve people’s lives everyday in this career.  I also liked that there are so many places I could work if I ever wanted to change jobs. I choose Longwood University specifically because its program in Nationally Certified, which means as soon as I graduate, I am automatically eligible to sit for the national exam and be certified!  Plus Longwood has a nationwide reputation in the field of Recreational Therapy.”

What is Therapeutic Recreation?

Therapeutic Recreation plays a significant role in the health care system, and in the delivery of leisure services by providing professional practice in a broad spectrum of institutions and agencies.

Recreational Therapy services are delivered by qualified professionals who utilize various methods to promote the independent physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning of people disabled as a result of trauma or disease.

The primary outcome of Therapeutic Recreation practice is to provide the client with opportunities to enhance and/or maintain a meaningful, satisfying, and healthy life-style.
