Our Mission

The mission of the LUPD Card Program is to assist students, faculty and staff at Longwood University by enhancing convenience and service for campus access, meal plans, printing, library services and personal financial services. It is a goal of the LUPD ID card to maximize the use of current technologies in order to deliver efficient services to the Longwood campus community through the issuance and use of a Longwood owned personal photo ID card.

History of Longwood University’s Security System

In February 2000, Longwood University’s Board of Visitors approved the university’s commitment to maintaining the highest level of safety and security on campus and provided its unanimous support for the improvements detailed in the update on Campus Security & Safety and for the budget amendments being submitted to the General Assembly on behalf of the University.

At that time, the university’s security installation project began. This security system allowed controlled access into labs and 9 residential halls, monitoring of door forced and door held alarms, and audible fire and trouble alarms from residence halls to the Department of Public Safety.

With the inception of an integrated security management system, Longwood University’s Photo ID Center was created. Rapid growth and utilization of the system deemed it an essential step in handling the security management of the campus.

The DuoProx II proximity ID card that is issued has a multipurpose use across the campus. The encoded magnetic stripe is integrated with the Aramark dining services computer for meal plans and for printing in the computer labs. The encoded bar code is used in the Library as a library card and the card itself is used for physical access into the residence halls. All of this is handled from the ID Center by the System Administrator and alarms are monitored 24 hours a day by the Department of Public Safety.

At the inception, there were only 9 residence halls reporting fire alarms in this manner. Alarms are monitored 24 hours a day in the Department of Public Safety providing continuity of response from our police department Entrance into our parking garage is also controlled by the system.

We are well known as an ADA accessible campus, and this is an integral part of our standards as a new building progresses. All door hardware must be compatible with our security software and programmed accordingly.

Since the security system’s inception, we have expanded tremendously both in our needs and functions. In the beginning, we started with 10 building controllers managing 41 doors. Currently, we have 23 building controllers managing 298 installations throughout the campus in residential buildings, academic buildings. and in our parking garage. With the current new construction planned, we expect to have well over 300 doors monitored by our security system.

Future plans at Longwood University involve the implementation of the LANCER Card system (a debit card) for vending, and laundry facilities. The one card will eliminate the need for carrying cash around campus. Convenience and security for all involved is the main goal for this progression.

Our security management system has exceeded the expectations of the University by maintaining the highest level of security for our students, faculty, and staff. By utilizing Lenel On-Guard’s innovative design combined with new technology, we are bringing Longwood University into the future world of an ever changing security market.
