Roles and Responsibilities
The university will be defining certain security roles and responsibilities which will be fulfilled by individuals across the campus.
How will this change affect me?
System Owners, System Administrators, Data Owners, Data Custodians, Privacy Officers
If you are identified to serve in one of these roles you will be made aware of your designation and the accompanying responsibilities. Data owners have been identified in the past, but the way the role is defined will be adapted to fit current needs. By identifying the individuals who fill these roles more decisions about how to protect systems and data can be made by those most closely associated with the systems and data. Privacy officers will be assigned to assist system and data owners in determining the appropriate protection requirements of university data and systems.
Users
Certain policies, procedures, forms or other documentation may require you to contact a system owner, system administrator, data owner or data custodian. Those assigned security responsibilities may also seek your input on issues such as the data classification and risk assessment. Being aware of these designations and what they mean will be helpful to you in your use of IT resources and systems.
When will this change happen?
The process of identifying those individuals with specific security responsibilities has begun.
Spring 2009:
- The university's Vice Presidents were appointed to the role of "system owner" for the systems under their responsibility.
- A Data Privacy Council was convened to fulfill the role of "privacy officer." These individuals will champion issues of privacy, monitor compliance, assess privacy risks and serve as a point of contact for questions regarding privacy.
Summer 2009:
- Vice Presidents were consulted for their input on which individuals the ISO should appoint as data owners and plans have been made to meet with data owners in September 2009.
Who can I contact with questions or concerns?
