MOAT Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do I get emails from support@awareity.com?
Longwood University contracts with the Awarity company for the MOAT product to do the state mandated security training.  Messages generated by the system for new participants, certification reminders, and other messages will appear to come from this e-mail address.  Also be sure that none of your email spam filters are preventing these types of messages from being delivered to your inbox.
  • Why do I need to take this training?
In addition to being a state mandate that all users receive yearly information security training, information security is becoming an item that everyone needs to be aware of in their daily lives.  The ever present threat of identity and information theft are constantly a threat that needs to be addressed.  Often people are unaware that the actions that they take (or don't take) on a regular basis place the security of Longwood's information as well as your own personal information at risk.  This training seeks to make you aware of those risks and how to avoid them.
  • What do I need to take this training?
A Windows PC computer with the Internet Explorer Web Browser version 6 or higher is needed.  No other browsers or other computing environments (MAC, Linux, etc.) are supported at this time.  PC's can be found in the Library Information Center/Commons, Coyner Multimedia Lab and other Academic Computing labs.
  • Getting a blank white screen at log in?
Try disabling or uninstalling the Yahoo! or Google Toolbars or adding them to your unblocked sites as MOAT launches in a new pop-up window.  These products and others that block pop-ups will interfere with the MOAT site loading correctly

If you see the Runtime or a similar error shown below when you click on the pop up test link above, it may mean you have a popup blocking software running also.  Click "No" and read the message near the top of the screen.

Example of Runtime Error of "mine" being "null" if you have a pop up blocker running.
    • Password troubles?
      • Options to change your password can be found under the Tools link near the bottom of the screen.
      • It must be at least 8 characters in length
      • It must contain at least one character from 2 of the following categories:
        • Lowercase letters (a through z),
        • Uppercase letters (A through Z),
        • Numbers (0 through 9),
        • Special Characters (~!@#$%^&*?;:+=_-)
      • It may not be a recently used password.
      • The password is then compared against your previous passwords in order to verify that it is not a previously used password. We have found in the past that a "cached web page" will sometimes keep responding that the password has already been utilized. "Cached" web pages are pages your web browser has visited that the browser has kept a local copy of to make future loading faster.  The problem is that you are sometimes stuck with "old" pages when viewing.  In Internet Explorer, you can go to Tools, Internet Options.  Depending on whether you have version 7 or above, options are slightly different.  With version 7 and above, on the "General" tab, click on the "Settings" button beneath the "Browsing History" area.  This opens the "Temporary Internet Files and History Settings" window.  Click on the "Every time I visit the webpage" option.  That will ensure you are always viewing the most current version.  You may still have those older pages available to you, so now underneath the "Browsing history" area, choose the "Delete" button.

General Tab of Internet Options is shown with the Settings option to choose the "Every time I visit the webpage" option.

You may still have those older pages available to you, so now underneath the "Browsing history" area, choose the "Delete" button.  Choose the "Delete files" button next to "Temporary Internet Files" which will removed any of the "cached" / stored web pages you have visited.  Closing your browser and revisiting the site may also be necessary.

Use the "Delete files" option underneath "Temporary Internet Files" to clear your "cached" web pages.

With earlier versions of Internet Explorer, the option is found under "Tools", "Internet Options", "General" tab and "Settings".  Select the "Every Visit to Page" option.   Choose "OK".  You will need to then click on the "Delete Files" button in the "Temporary Internet Files" section of the General tab.  Choose the "OK" button until the "Internet Options" area is closed.
