The National Cyber Security Alliance, US Department of Homeland Security and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center recognize October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. This month serves as an annual reminder of the important role we all play in protecting our computers and our nation's critical cyber infrastructure.

Ensure your antivirus software, automatic updates and firewall are all working correctly on any computer you use. If you are using a university computer do not attempt to alter any of the implemented security controls.

Choose strong passwords that use a variety of characters. Keep your passwords a secret. Change your passwords regularly.

Consider the source before clicking on links. Be wary of links on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, message boards, etc. because they may lead to malware or scams. Don't install software or updates from a pop-up window as those installs are often malware.
