Preparing for Arrival at Longwood University

3 Months Before Arrival or as Soon as Possible:

  • Schedule a Visa Interview at Your US Consulate - Instructions about how to set up your appointment at the consulate can be found in your acceptance letter and online at: International Affairs.
  • Prepare for the Visa Interview- Bring the following documents to the visa interview, and be prepared to explain your study plans:
    • Form or I-20
    • Letter of Acceptance
    • Proof of having paid the SEVIS fee (Form I-797) completed at least 3 days before the interview
    • Documentation evidencing financial ability to meet expenses (bank statements, scholarship letters, etc)
    • Evidence of residence abroad (your permanent address in your home country)
    • Passport valid at least 6 months into the future
    • Form DS-160 confirmation page (completed at least 2 days before the interview)
    • Photographs meeting the specified criteria (color, position of the face, recent image, 5 centimeters wide and 5 centimeters long, etc)
    • Proof of having paid the Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee (completed at least 2 days before the interview)
    • Visa reciprocity fee (if applicable)

This list is not all inclusive.  Other documents may be required by your consulate so be sure to check the embassy or consulate website for specifics. It is recommended that you also justify your intention to return to your home country after you complete your degree.  This can be a return airfare ticket or simply your well thought-out plans for your future when you return to your home country.

2 Months Before Arrival or as Soon as Possible: 

  • Flight Itinerary: Longwood University offers free airport shuttle service once per semester. If you are are arriving on this date and want to take advantage of our free transportation from the Richmond International Airport (RIC) to Longwood University, you need to arrive at the time that is listed on the Airport Pick-up and Drop-off Dates posted on our website. Once you have booked your flight, you need to email the itinerary to Patti Trent at trentpf@longwood.edu. and Eileen Beach at beachem@londwood.edu.
  • Immunization Record: All Longwood University students are required to present an up-to-date immunization record completed by a doctor or health care provider before arrival.  The certificate of immunization form was sent with your acceptance letter. You will not be able to register for classes until you have a valid immunization record on file.

The Day You Leave:

  • Travel Documents: Make sure that you are carrying the following documents when you board your flight to America:
    • Passport with Visa inside
    • I-20
    • Evidence of Financial Support (Plan on having paid for your session before or as soon as you arrive.)
    • Airfare Ticket

 Once You Arrive:

  • Placement test - In order to determine your level of English, you will need to take our placement test.  The test will be given on the first day of class.
  • Orientation - Orientation sessions for new students will be scheduled during your first week.  We will cover topics such as cultural adaptation, university resources, and immigration regulations.
