The Assignment Feature is new to this version of Blackboard.  An "Assignment" may be placed anywhere within the course by the instructor and is a good method to turn in files to the instructor from the whole class.

To create an Assignment, go into any area like Course Documents or Assignments (Assignment area and Assignment feature are not necessarily related) inside of the Control Panel.  Instead of adding a new item, go to the right side and in the Select drop-down menu, choose Assignment, then hit Go.

Assignment feature

Next, add a description of the Assignment, attach any files they'll need to complete the Assignment, and hit Submit.

You may or may not include a file for the students to download.  When the student is ready to submit the assignment, they should read over the list of suggestions about files submission to make sure they are ready.  Also, they are only able to submit an Assignment once, so be sure they've completed the necessary work.   They can Browse to the file on their computer, select it, and hit OK.  They can also enter a comment if they wish.  Here is a link to the student information about electronic file submission.

This file is sent to the instructor along with any comments the student has made.  The instructor can then download the submissions from the whole class, grade them electronically (after extracting them from the .ZIP file that Blackboard created and you downloaded to your computer), and return them to the individual students.

Grading the Assignments

Go to the Gradebook in the Control Panel.  It opens to the spreadsheet view and you will find the area for this Assignment.

Clicking on an individual student's lines will show you information for that student's assignment.  When you click on the student's line, you can then click on the View button at the end of the line to view the student's submissions as pictured below.  Under the View button is also where you return digitally graded assignments to the student.  You'll need to fill in section 3 to return the file to the student and you can add optional comments for yourself under section 4.

Clicking on the Assignment's TITLE at the top of that column will give you options related to that Assignment (downloading all submissions in particular)such as:

Feature Description
Item Grade List View and modify users' grades.
Item Detail View detailed statistics for the Gradebook item.
Item Information Modify the name, description, availability, and other properties of the Gradebook item.
***Item Download*** Download ALL files submitted by students for this item.  This gives you the option to choose which files to download, puts them in a .ZIP file and then gives you a link to download all files at once.  You'll need WinZip to open it once you've downloaded it.  The system also appends the student's ID onto the file name to make sorting the files out on your computer easier.
Item File Cleanup Delete or View all files submitted by students and returned by the instructor for this assignment.

For the student to review the graded work and instructor's comments, click on the Assignment from the original location (Course Documents, etc) or they can get to it through Tools and My Grades.  The student should be able to view all files from this location.  It will look something like this to them:
