Creating Backup Copies of Your Old Course:

Symptoms: Your older course is going to be removed or you wish to have a backup of your Blackboard course.  You do not need to back up courses for the current term or the last year unless you want to!

Steps:

  1. Enter the Blackboard course as the instructor.  Go into the Control Panel area and select Export Course from the Course Options area in the lower left side.
Course Options area of Blackboard course
  2. From the Export Course menu, mark the boxes next to the areas of your course you want in the archived course.  Press Submit.
  3. Follow the Receipt directions to right click (option+click for Mac users) on the created link and download the backup copy of the course to your computer.
Right click on the link to download the file.
  4. Choose a location on your computer where you can easily find the file later.  It will be named something like "ExportFile_CourseName.zip"

The following is a link to a program "bFree" written by UNC Chapel Hill that will allow you to peruse your exported course file and create a set of pages with links based on your Blackboard course files.  Use bFree to open a Blackboard™ course export or archive file and display the content of the course.  Preview and select the content items that you want to extract, then extract them as a set of files and folders or as an independent Web site. Step-by-step instructions are included in the application.  This link is provided as a courtesy.  Longwood's User Support Services does not offer support for this program.

You can use the "Import Package" option from the Control Panel to restore the information into your newer course.
