ACADEMIC COMPUTING LABORATORIES PRINTING POLICY

Draft 1
August 11, 2000

Information and Instructional Technology Services provides registered students with a limited number of free black and white printouts. These limits were established to assist students to complete their work without incurring additional expenses. Those users, however, who wish to print beyond these quotas may do so but at an additional cost. All general access IITS computer labs have black toner laser printers for users. In addition, Hiner 14/16 and STOA have a color laser printer for student printing. Printing is also available in the Reference Room of the Library.

The following printing guidelines are strictly enforced:

Each registered student will be given a quota of 150 pages of free black and white printing for the Fall semester. There will also be a quota of 150 pages of free black and white printing for the Spring semester. Summer printing quotas are limited to 75 free pages for all registered students.

If a student does not use the entire quota during the academic semester, this quota expires on the day of the last examination for that semester. Quotas do not carry over to the next semester.

Additional laser printing beyond the quota is available at $.09 cents per page.

There is no free color printing. All color printing will cost $1.00 per page.

Only IITS-provided paper may be used in the academic computing labs. User-provided paper (color, heavy weight paper, card stock, etc.) will damage IITS printers and are not permitted.

Faculty may print from all IITS printers using a department ID card. Please check with your department secretary. Departments will be billed for printing at the standard rates described above.

Classes scheduled to be taught in a lab will not be charged for printing during class time.

New print Quotas and Printing Policy

In the last four years both IITS and the Library have noted that annual printing expenses have risen from $4,000 in 1996 to $25,000 in 1999. The purpose of this printing policy is to control printing costs, conserve resources, and still allow flexibility for users to print their academic assignments. Furthermore, many faculty no longer use printed hand-outs in class, but post these documents, as well as syllabi and assignments on the Web, thus shifting the burden of printing from the academic departments to IITS.

During the 2000 summer, the College contracted with Pharos Printing to develop a print control system that will allow all students and faculty to complete work but assist the College in resource conservation. Each user is credited with a free quota of printing per semester. When this quota is exhausted, the user will be billed for printing through the telemangement system. This system generates a bill and sends it to the student’s address. The user has 30 days to pay this bill. At the beginning of each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer sessions) each user will start with the appropriate, fresh quota.
