Multimedia Services

Multimedia Services can be found in Hiner G18, just inside the back entrance of Hiner, and located beside the Longwood Radio Station. The team consists of William Lynn and Robin Dickson. They are equipped to aid with most multimedia related events on campus, and offer a variety of services to the Longwood Community including tape duplication, live recording, sound reinforcement, and video editing.

Multimedia Services strives to provide the Longwood community with their multimedia education and production needs. All services can be scheduled through User Support Services, or through the contact information below. As an extension of Informational and Instructional Technology Services, we share the same mission goals and are open to learning, supporting, and providing training in new media for educational and promotional purposes.
Take a look below to find out more about the services we provide.

* Multimedia Services reserves the right to refuse any and all requests based on copyright infringement. For more information, please refer to the Fair Use Guidelines For Educational Multimedia posted by the Consortium of College and University Media Centers (CCUMC).

Media Duplication

Video tapes, audio tapes, and Compact Discs to be duplicated must be accompanied by a work order available through User Support Services (395-4357). Blank media must be provided. Video tapes, audio tapes, and Compact Discs can be delivered to Hiner 18 or dropped off at User Support Services.

Duplications must be for educational use only, unless produced entirely in-house. U.S. Copyright Code also applies to all requests for media duplication.

Digitizing Media

Multimedia Services has the ability to digitize video in most formats with the exception of 8 mm tapes. We also have the ability to digitize most audio and still pictures. Call User Support Services at 395-4357 to place a work order. U.S. Copyright Code also applies to all requests for digitizing media.

NOTE:

  • Digitizing video requires a substantial amount of disk space and involves a balance between quality and size. Although full-motion, full screen video is more realistic and generally friendlier to the university community, it is not guaranteed to run smoothly when viewed on some machines. A simple formula for understanding the digitization process is: “x “(Frame size) multiplied by “y “(the number of frames per second) multiplied by “z” (seconds of video) = File size.

  • Digitizing will not improve or enhance the quality of the original source.

  • Digitizing, editing, and compressing video takes a good deal of time, as well as close work with the client. If digitizing for a multimedia presentation, please be sensitive to time constraints and flexible with scheduling.

Production

We currently offer a full range of post-production tools, from cutting and pasting source video to outputting a video tape, Compact Disc, or DVD of the finished product, complete with effects, transitions, titles, voice overs, background music, and credits. We currently use Adobe Premiere for video post-production, with Canopus' DV-REX RT for signal both in and out of the computer. Please note that producing a video requires a great deal of time and effort, and all requests should be made through User Support Services at 395-4357. Be sure to be flexible with your schedule. Also note that a minimum of thirty days notice is required.
