What are the methods used by the Center for Economic Education?

The LCEE offers workshops and seminars in special topics for teachers in a variety of formats to meet the needs of those teachers. Included are pre-service, in-service, all-day, and extended regular credit classes designed to teach teachers the strategies they need to incorporate economics into existing curricula.

Consultation with individuals and groups and specialized instructional materials are also available. Please contact us if there is a need we can meet.

What can the Center do for students?

The most important benefit to the students is that our programs help them in learning the economic and social studies standards of the Virginia SOLs. Programs and materials can be used to help students improve skills in math, analytical problem solving and communications as well as to improve their understanding and use of economics. Some of the programs (the Stock Market Game, for example) allow students to compete for recognition and special awards. On a broader level, the programs enhance life skills so students have a better chance of succeeding after leaving school.

What can the Center do for Teachers?

The LCEE's programs and materials can assist teachers in meeting their classroom objectives, as well as addressing Virginia SOLs. Resource people, instructional materials, and training are all available to allow teachers to incorporate economics into any part of the curriculum at all grade levels. Many of the seminars and courses can be used to earn recertification points and graduate credits. The LCEE can also help teachers to improve their own understanding of the economy and how it works.

What do the Center's Services Cost?

Many services, including consultation services and borrowing materials form out library, are free of charge. Instructional materials are also often provided at no charge for those attending seminars and workshops. Currently, there is a $22 registration fee for day-long workshops.  These workshops include breakfast, lunch, curriculum materials, and partial substitute reimbursements. At only $22, this is quite a deal!

Note: The LCEE does have funding to partially reimburse school systems for substitutes paid so that teachers may attend day-long workshops.
