LONGWOOD CENTER FOR THE ARTS
MAIN STREET GALLERY

The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA), the art museum of Longwood University, seeks proposals from installation artists for its Main Street Gallery. The Main Street Gallery is a 380-square-foot window-front space looking out on the crossroads of Main and Third Streets in downtown Farmville, Virginia. It is approximately 32 feet long by 11 feet wide, with 35 feet of running wall space. Proposals featuring works of any media, dimensions, and content are welcome. Installations must be able to withstand heat and direct sunlight. Volunteers can be provided to assist with installation, but artists must be available to install their work. Artists will receive a $1000 honorarium; $500 for transportation; and meals and accommodations during the installation.

Newly renovated in 2005, the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts is a 27,000-square-foot highly professional museum facility with state-of-the-art climate control. It exhibits works by international, national, and regional artists and also houses a permanent collection containing African, Chinese, and American art. The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts is a collaborative forum for students and faculty of Longwood University and the people of south central Virginia to explore visual art and its relevance to everyday life. The LCVA fosters creativity, intellectual curiosity, and involvement in the visual arts through its exhibitions, educational programs, permanent collection, and volunteer and internship programs. The LCVA is committed to improving the quality of life in the region by providing full access to the visual arts and to the ways art exemplifies beauty, hope, and the power of human imagination.

Three proposals a year will be commissioned. Selection will be based upon the clarity and professionalism of the proposal, artistic merit, and the artist’s experience in executing similar projects.
