Welcome!

LIBERAL STUDIES is an interdisciplinary program developed specifically to prepare students to teach in the Elementary grades (N,K-6), in the Middle grades (6-8), both Elementary and Middle grades, or in Special Education. The major in Liberal Studies provides a solid background in the main content areas taught in Elementary and Middle Schools: the social sciences, language arts, mathematics, and the sciences.

Faculty from a variety of Arts and Sciences disciplines have worked with faculty from the College of Education and Human Services to design the program and coordinate it with the sequence of education courses leading to N,K-6 (Elementary), 6-8 (Middle), and Special Education endorsement. The program provides a rich background to the Standards of Learning taught in Virginia Schools. It is also designed to develop broadly informed individuals who understand contemporary issues, and will provide civic and professional leadership.
