LIBERAL STUDIES TEACHER EDUCATION TIMELINES

 Please use the following to guide you in making decisions regarding what must be done when. Consult your advisor, Program Director, or Area Coordinator for assistance.

                                                                             

           WHAT            WHEN                  WHY

Decide which teaching license you want:
1.  NK-6 (Elementary),
2. 
6-8 (Middle),
3.  both, (N,K-8) or
4.  Special Education.
Register your choice

Upon admission, or during your freshman or sophomore year (can be changed)

Important for planning the courses needed to complete your  program.

Take and pass Praxis I national exam in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics 

Freshman year - (or sub SAT of 1100 with 530 each on  verbal and math)

Required for Admission to Teacher Preparation

Take EDUC 245 and     EDUC 260, or SPED 220 – First  courses in Education

Freshman  year

Required for “Admission to Teacher Preparation”

Maintain an overall G.P.A. of 2.5, with no grade less than a C in EDUC courses and in ENGL 150

Freshman year (and continuing) Students must maintain a 2.5 cum GPA.

Required for “Admission to Teacher Preparation”

Take Practicum I
(EDUC 265)

In May, Summer Session I, after 1st or 2nd year

Program requirement

 

Submit application for admission to the Teacher Preparation Program
on-line

By first semester  sophomore year

Required for admission into the program and prerequisite to upper level EDUC courses

Take Practicum II
(EDUC 370)

Summer session I or III after 2nd or 3rd year

Program requirement

Complete most or all Liberal Studies courses before Partnership semester

Freshman-Junior years

Content is necessary, applied and used in Education methods courses

Submit request for Partnership Program

Semester prior to doing Partnership

Allows you to request your Partnership placement

Partnership Semester

2nd semester junior or 1st semester senior year
Middle School Partnership offered Fall only!

Program requirement
Preparation for Student Teaching

Take Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA) and Virginia Communication & Literacy Assessment (VCLA) After Partnership Semester Required for Licensure

Submit Student Teaching Application

 

One full year before student teaching

Admission to Student Teaching

File degree application

One full year before graduation

 

 University requirement

 

Take Praxis II: either
Elementary test #0014 or,  Middle School tests in your 2  concentration areas

At or near end of Liberal Studies courses: 2nd semester Junior or 1st semester senior year
