Cell Phone Policy

Purpose

The Janet D. Greenwood Library policy regarding the use of cellular telephones attempts to strike a balance between two competing factors:

These guidelines were developed in response to concerns from students, faculty, and visitors about the increased noise in the Library due to cell phone use. Common sense and courtesy are the order of the day.

Policy

When entering the Library, please set cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices to silent or vibrate mode.

To preserve some quiet areas in the library while at the same time keeping cell phone use convenient for patrons, the Greenwood Library has divided its space into texting-only zones and cell phone conversation zones.

Texting Only Zones

In these areas, where patrons typically engage in quiet study or group work, patrons are welcome to use the texting functions of their cell phones.  For other uses, including making or receiving calls, patrons should go to one of the cell-phone conversation zones.   Patrons engaging in cell phone conversations that disrupt the work of others will be asked by library staff to move to one of the designated cell phone areas or outside. If you wish to report inappropriate cell phone use, contact a library staff member at the nearest service desk.

Cell Phone Conversation Zones

In these areas, patrons are welcome to talk on their cell phones. Even in acceptable areas, cell phone conversations should be conducted in a low voice.  Please be considerate of others and talk on your cell phone only in one of the areas listed below:
