Policies and Procedures for Community Patrons

Purpose

As a state-supported institution, the Greenwood Library is open to the public. While the students, faculty and staff of Longwood University are the primary audience for library services, the Library extends certain borrowing and computer use privileges to community patrons.

Scope

These policies apply to anyone who is not currently enrolled or employed at Longwood University. Family members of Longwood faculty, staff, or students are considered community patrons.

Policies and Procedures

Computer Use

Borrowing Privileges

All children under the age of 13 using the Library are required to be accompanied by an adult. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for deciding what resources are appropriate for their children. The Library supports open access to all information and does not attempt to filter or censor resources. Please see the Policies page for a complete list of all Greenwood Library policies.

Computer Use

All community users must sign up at the Information Desk to use the Library’s Internet workstations.

You will be required to record your name and start time of usage. A staff member will direct you to an available workstation.

The purpose of the sign-up is to gather and compile daily operational statistics. As the Library does not retain Internet sign-in logs, they are discarded after recording necessary numeric data.

Please see the Library's Internet Usage Policy and Internet Printing Policy for more information.

Effective August 25, 2003

Borrowing Privileges

Obtaining a Library Card

Anyone who is not currently employed or enrolled at Longwood must fill out a patron card to check out books from the Library. To receive a Library card:

You will be responsible for notifying the Library of any change in name, address, phone number, and/or status from non-student to student.

Checking Out Books

  1. The Library card must be presented each time books are borrowed. You will be responsible for any and all books checked out with your card. Lost Library cards will be replaced for a fee of one dollar ($1.00).
  2. Each community patron may check out a limit of five (5) books. Audiovisual and personal reserve materials may not be checked out by community patrons. Please see the Library's Circulation Policies for borrowing privileges accorded to Hampden-Sydney and Governor’s School students, faculty and staff.
  3. Books may be checked out for three weeks (21 days) and renewed once. You may renew borrowed books:
  4. Borrowing privileges will be suspended for patrons who have fines or who have overdue books. An outside book drop for returning books after hours is located near the front entrance doors of Greenwood Library on the Race Street side of the building.

Notices and Fines

As a courtesy to you, overdue notices will be mailed out on the first day any borrowed book is overdue. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not exempt or preclude you from payment of the accrued fines. Fines of $.25 cents per day, per book, will be charged for overdue books starting the first day that the book is overdue.

If a book checked out to you is needed by another patron, a letter will be sent to you recalling the book on a specific date. If not returned on this date, a fine of $5.00 (five dollars) per day will be charged until the book is returned.

After 30 days an overdue book will be assumed lost and a billing letter will be sent for the lost book. The Library reserves the right to assign delinquent patrons to the State Department of Taxation and/or a collection agency if necessary.
