Many database vendors allow you to either directly or indirectly export your saved citations into RefWorks. The following sections provide brief information specifically related to databases in the Greenwood Library.
University of Massachusetts-Amherst had an extensive list of databases with instructions for exporting to RefWorks. You may also check the Help section in RefWorks for Exporting from a Data Service. Both of these lists cover direct and indirect export and include databases not available at the Greenwood Library.
Database Vendors with Direct Export to RefWorks
All of the following database vendor groups allow you to directly export your saved citations into RefWorks. The basic process involves the following:
- Search one of the databases that allows direct export to RefWorks. To see which databases are associated with each interface family, see the Direct Export Database Chart.
- Mark or tag the citations you want to save.
- Follow the appropriate click sequence in the chart below.
- Login to your RefWorks account when the new window opens. If the RefWorks login does not appear, check to be sure that you have pop-ups enabled, or open a new window and login to RefWorks.
- Look in the “Last Imported” folder in RefWorks for your citations.

Selected Gale Databases and RefWorks
To get marked citations from databases in the Gale database group that are not on the Powersearch interface into RefWorks, you have to go the following two-step process:
A. In the Gale database:
- Conduct a search and select the records you want by clicking the "Mark" check box to the left of each citation.
- Click the View mark list link (left side of screen).
- In E-Mail Delivery options, select Abstracts (if available) and email the list to yourself.
- When the email arrives, open the email message.
- Open your word processor/text editor (e.g., Word or Notepad) and copy and paste the entire message body into a blank document.
- From the File menu, select Save As. Save your file as plain text or as a text file (with a .txt extension) - not a .doc extension - to the location of your choice (e.g., desktop).
B. In RefWorks:
- Login to RefWorks.
- Select References/Import from the toolbar.
- Select GALE InfoTrac Web as the Import Filter/Data Source and <Multiple Databases> as the database.
- Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
- Click Import.
- Your citation(s) will be imported into the Last Imported Folder. You may now move them into the folder of your choice.
Gale databases that cannot export directly to RefWorks:
- Book Review Index
- General Business File ASAP
- Business and Company Resource Center
- Health and Wellness Resource Center
- Literature Resource Center
- MLA Bibliography
- Shakespeare Collection
Other Databases and RefWorks
Databases that do not provide direct export to RefWorks may still allow you to mark citations and save them to a file that is compatible with RefWorks. The procedure is often similar to the procedure for the Gale databases.
In most cases, the following basic steps are involved:
- Mark or select the citations you want to save.
- Select the database function to print, save or email citations.
- Look for an option to save a text file for bibliographic citation managers.
- Save the file to your computer.
- Login to RefWorks.
- Select “Import” from the References dropdown menu.
- Select the “Import Filter/Data Source” for the database.
- Be sure the “Import data from the following text file” is selected.
- Click the “Browse” button to search for and select your text file.
- Click the “Import” button at the bottom of the page.
For more information, check the Help section of the specific database or contact a librarian in the Information Center.
