Library Instruction Request Form for Faculty

FAQ

The Greenwood Library offers a program of instruction that is designed to fit the specific needs of faculty members' course work. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and provide library instruction sessions tailored to specific course objectives and assignments. Our goal is to enable students to effectively select, use, and evaluate information resources. A session in research strategy can help your students become more productive and effective information seekers.

Freshman Seminar and English 150 courses are coordinated by Liz Kocevar-Weidinger, Reference/Instruction Services Librarian. Upper level classes will be directed to the respective department Librarian Liaison. If you have any questions or suggestions about this program, please contact Liz Kocevar-Weidinger (434.395.2445).

The timing and content of Library Instruction are crucial to student motivation and learning. Sessions should be scheduled to coincide with occasions when students will be working on their research. Library Instruction is most effective when it is related to a class assignment, so librarians tailor the class to the specific research needs of the class. Students learn to select, use and evaluate sources pertinent to their topic.

General orientation and basic library skills

This class is most appropriate for introductory research classes whose students have little or no experience in an academic library. It provides an overview of the Library, its services, and basic research strategies.

Course-related instruction

The liaison librarian for an academic department will provide course-related library instruction by faculty request. Topics may vary widely, from instruction on how to use the Internet to searching databases in a particular field of study. Please contact your liaison librarian for further information or to request instruction. Librarians and instructors work cooperatively to develop instruction that will enable students to complete course assignments / research through effective use of the Library's resources. After consultation with the course instructor, a librarian designs a program based on the goals and objectives of the course or assignment.

Procedures for scheduling classes

A minimum of 10 days notice is requested when scheduling a session as we prefer to design each session individually to suit your unique class needs. When scheduling a session, please provide the following information:

Instruction at the Information Desk and by appointment

Faculty and students may request an appointment with a liaison librarian for assistance in learning new sources and skills. See our Librarian Liaison page to contact a librarian for your subject area.
