How to search the WWW.  Introduction

At the end of this module, you'll be able to answer these questions:

What is definition of a URL and some of the common domain names used in URLs?
How do I  locate a website using the URL or a Search Engine?
How do I conduct a basic search in the Yahoo and AltaVista search engines?
What are some of the factors to consider in evaluating the quality of a website?

You are fairly familiar with the Web or you wouldn't be logged into this tutorial right now. Chances are you've had exposure to the Web before and you've even searched the Web for specific types of information. Many people who search the Web are frustrated with the vast amount of information they retrieve. Since anyone can publish on the Web, the Web is a home for all kinds of information.

The types of Web resources that might be useful to a university student could include the following:

online databases that provide journal articles;
research information and clearinghouses for specific subjects;
images, film clips, and sound recordings; and
statistics and other government information.
