Longwood Athletic Banquet Honors Student-Ahtletes

Longwood College recognized its 1998-99 student-athletes at its annual Athletics Banquet on April 25. The NCAA Division II institution is a member of the 12-school Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC), as well as the prestigious Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). The top individual award winners are listed below. Team GPA awards were also announced with the female honor going to the women's tennis team (3.338 team GPA), while the male honor went to the men's tennis team (2.872 team GPA).

Female Athlete of The Year  Libby Gough
Amelia, VA, Amelia County High School
Senior led softball team to a record-breaking season in 1999 as Longwood won a school-record 38 games (38-15); led team in 10 offensive statistical categories, including a batting average of .462 with nine home runs and 60 RBI; established 11 new school records for season hits (72), RBI (60), home runs (nine), slugging % (.737%), and walks (24), along with career games (151), at-bats (463), hits (183), RBI (138), home runs (18), and doubles (39); 1st-team All-CVAC selection, runner-up in voting for CVAC ŒPlayer of the Year'; two-time CVAC ŒPlayer of the Week'; ECAC Division II South All-Star; 1st-team VaSID College Division All-State; Sports Plus Invitational Tournament Division II 'Most Valuable Player'; daughter of Paul and Christine Gough; business administration major.

Male Athlete of The Year, Fred Stoots
Moseley, VA, Clover Hill High School
Senior led baseball team to a 25-21 record, the 19th-straight year that Longwood has attained at least 20 wins, and the ninth consecutive year with at least 25 wins; hit .367 with team-best 62 hits, nine home runs, one triple, team-best 16 doubles, 41 runs, and 44 RBI; 2nd-team All-CVAC selection; 1st-team VaSID College Division All-State; ranks eighth in career home runs (25), and ninth in career RBI (133); son of Ed and Pat Stoots; physical education major.

Freshman Female Athlete of The Year, Vicki Matkovich
Wheeling, WV, Wheeling Park High School

Freshman led women's golf team to seven top-10 team tournament finishes during 1998-99, including the championship of the Lancers own Tina Barrett Invitational last September; team-best stroke-average of 80.35 through 26 rounds, including 12 rounds in the 70's; led the team during 11 of the 22 team rounds played this year, including a low 18-hole score of 76, a team-low 36-hole score of 155 (76-79), and a low 54-hole score of 246 (82-77-87); tied for third-place at 1999 NCAA Division II & III National Championships with 78-81-78-79-316; had eight top-20 individual finishes in 11 tournaments, including a third-place effort in the TBI (81-79-160) and a fourth-place finish at the William & Mary Invitational (81-79-160) in March; NGCA honorable mention All-America; daughter of Matthew and Rita Matkovich; majoring in business administration.

Freshman Male Athlete of The Year, Andy Plum
Nokesville, VA, Brentsville High School

Freshman started 19 of 20 matches while leading men's soccer team to 11-10 record, fifth during CVAC regular-season, and into CVAC Tournament Semifinals; led team in scoring with 13 goals and three assists for 29 points; 1st-team All-South Region; CVAC ŒFreshman of Year'; 1st-team All-CVAC; All-CVAC Tournament Team; VaSID 1st team All-State; son of Rick and Joanne Plum; undecided on major

Female Henry I. Willett Scholar-Athlete of The Year,
Mary Barron
Great Falls, VA, Paul VI High School

Biology and Physical Education Major, Athletic Training Minor; 3.545 GPA Senior started 27 of 27 games while leading women's basketball team to 16-11 record; third on team in scoring with 11.8 ppg., and led team with 9.5 rpg.; shot 44.7% from field and 56.3% at line; added 41 steals, 20 assists, and 18 blocks; season-highs of 28 points, 17 rebounds, three assists, and four steals; team finished 12-6 in CVAC, third during regular-season, advancing to CVAC Tournament Quarterfinals; ECAC Honor Roll; daughter of Francis and Mary Ann Barron.

Laurie Hogan
Charlottesville, VA, Albemarle High School

Psychology Major; 3.425 GPA Senior led lacrosse team to a record of 11-4 and #7 ranking in the IWLCA Poll; second on team in scoring with 41 goals and eight assists for 49 points; IWLCA 2nd-team All-America; scored 126 career goals (third all-time) with 21 career assists (third all-time) for 147 career points (third all time); daughter of Ray and Betty Hogan Jr..

Male Henry I. Willett Scholar-Athlete of The Year, Greg Edmonds
Midlothian, VA, Midlothian High School

Biology Major; 3.353 GPA Senior started 11 of 17 games played as pitcher for baseball team that finished 25-21, the 19th-straight year that Longwood has attained at least 20 wins, and the ninth consecutive year with at least 25 wins; led pitching staff with 11 starts, four complete games, 74.2 innings, and 76 strikeouts; pitching record of 4-4 with 3.74 ERA; CVAC ŒPitcher of Week'; son of Doug and Judy Edmonds.

Female ECAC Student-Athlete of The Year, Janelle Kern
Marysville, PA, Susquenita High School

Senior started 17 of 17 matches while leading field hockey team to an 11-6 record, and a berth in the ECAC Semifinals; led team in scoring with 10 goals and three assists for 23 points; NFHCA Division II 1st-team All-America; North-South Senior All-Star Contest participant; USFHA ŒA' Camp invitee; HockeyPointe National ŒPlayer of Week'; ranks 5th in career goals (27), and assists (16) at Longwood; daughter of Nevin and Malinda Kern; mathematics major, secondary education minor.

Male ECAC Student-Athlete of The Year, Darryl Graham
Gloucester, VA, Gloucester High School

Freshman compiled a team-best record of 19-11 at 141-pounds for wrestling team that finished with a record of 7-8; won weight class at Apprentice School Invitational; placed second at prestigious Ed-South Tournament at Carson-Newman (Tenn.) and at Washington & Lee; attained third-seed for Southeast Regional Tournament; son of Alan and Sherry Graham; economics major.

Female Heartland of Virginia Sports Club Leadership Award, Bonnie Maholchic
Chesapeake, VA, Indian River High School

Junior plays #1 singles for women's tennis team that finished with record of 19-6, the second-highest season win total in school history; team tied for third-place during CVAC regular-season; singles record of 11-12, doubles record of 18-8; 1st-team All-CVAC; daughter of Robert and Bonnie Maholchic; physical education major.

Male Heartland of Virginia Sports Club Leadership Award, Shawn Torian
Scottsburg, VA, Halifax County High School

Senior hit a team-best .392 with a team-best 13 home runs, 46 RBI, and 46 runs scored for baseball team that finished with a 25-21 record, the 19th-straight year that Longwood has attained at least 20 wins, and the ninth consecutive year with at least 25 wins; 1st-team All-CVAC selection; ECAC Division II South All-Star; 1st-team VaSID College Division All-State; ranks third in career home runs (36) and fourth in career RBI (160); son of Paul and Janice Torian; physical education major.
