
Longwood has moved up from number nine to number seven among top regional
public schools in the South in the year 2000 edition of U.S.News &
World Report's exclusive rankings of "America's Best Colleges."
U.S.News bases it rankings on academic reputation, graduation and
retention rates, financial resources and alumni giving. The regional
category encompasses institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate
and master's programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. Among all
southern regional colleges and universities, public and private, Longwood
was ranked 23rd, placing it in the 'top tier.' The South region includes
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,
North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
