An Uncommon Gift

By the time you read this, you may have already heard the news about the largest capital gift in the history of Longwood College $3 million from Longwood alumna Joan Perry Brock, Class of 1964, and Macon F. Brock, Jr., of Virginia Beach. An uncommon gift that will be used to create Brock Commons, a beautifully landscaped promenade that will become the central focal point of Longwood College.

Brock Commons will encompass the closing of Pine Street to vehicles and will run the length of the campus, providing a collegial atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. According to Longwood president Patricia P. Cormier, "this idea has been a dream of ours for many years and, thanks to Joan and Macon Brock, that dream will soon become a reality. Brock Commons will not only enhance the beauty of our campus, it will also make our campus safer for students with the closing of Pine Street."

You can read all about it in our cover story written by Kent Booty.

Uncommon Valor

This issue also includes our first feature story about our alumnae during WWII. Harriette Vaden Price, Class of 1940, served in the American Red Cross during WWII and her story will give you some idea of what it was like over there.
At age 82, Harriette now works as the concierge at the Courtyard Marriott in her hometown of Williamsburg.

Plus ...

The Longwood School of Business and Economics
has achieved distinction thanks to the leadership of
Dean Berkwood Farmer. Under Dean Farmer, the school sought and achieved accreditation by AACSB
the International Association for Management Education.
He recruited a 22-member Corporate Advisory Board to help Longwood keep in touch with the real world of business.
He requires Web portfolios and internships of all business students. And, enrollment has grown from 550 students in 1995 to 740 students in 2000. He's done such a good job, in fact, that Wright State University has hired him as the new Dean of their College of Business. Although Dean Farmer will be missed, he has set a true course for the future of the Longwood School of Business and Economics as you will learn in a feature story by Judy McReynolds.

You'll probably be hearing more about Ransford Doherty, Class of 1997, the subject of our alumni profile. And, if you are a fan of primetime TV, you might have already seen Ransford's appearances on "ER" and "JAG." After graduating from Longwood, Ransford decided to head for the coast and pursue his passion for acting. Bill Fiege, assistant director of alumni relations and a long-time friend of Ransford, wrote the story you'll find in this issue. We predict it won't be long before you see Ransford on the big screen.

When Christine and Cabell Estes of South Hill sent their first daughter to Longwood College over 30 years ago, they had no idea that they were starting a legacy of learning that would span generations. Today, the link continues with granddaughter Crystal Nemeth. Judy McReynolds profiles this family's Longwood Legacy. Judy also does a profile of Anne Kelly Bowman, Class of 1939, a loyal supporter of Longwood College who expands her support in the
form of a challenge to our alumni The Bowman Challenge.

You'll find all that and the usual roundup of news, sports,
and upcoming alumni events in this third issue of Longwood magazine.
