Letter from the Director of Multicultural Affairs and International Student Services

As the Director of Multicultural Affairs and International Student Services, I would like to welcome you to the Longwood University Community.  You have joined the ranks of those who have been selected because of their commitment to academic excellence and to Citizen Leadership.  For these reasons, the University has ranked above our peer institutions when responding to the following statement:

“More Longwood freshmen 78.6% say that they have socialized with someone of a different racial or ethnic group in the past year than freshmen in the comparison group (CIRP) Cooperative Institutional Research Program 68% (for all 4 year public institutions)- and expect to do so in the next year.”

“A racially and ethnically diverse university student body has far-ranging and significant benefits for all students, non-minorities and minorities alike. Students learn better in a diverse educational environment, and they are better prepared to become active participants in our pluralistic, democratic society once they leave such a setting” Expert report of Patricia Gurin

In addition, the 2005 U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Colleges” ranks Longwood in the category of “Highest Graduation Rates.” Longwood has the 7th best graduation rate for African-American students of the 207 Public Masters Institutions and was also listed as having the following:

Campus Diversity: African-American (8%) and International Students (1%)

I am sure that your stay at Longwood will prove to be both academically and socially rewarding. We welcome your future contributions to enhancing our appreciation of difference and sameness. Consequently, I encourage you to seek out opportunities that both expand your knowledge and awareness of our diverse and democratic society. Your view of the world adds to the richness and diversity of our campus climate.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and International Student Services works with the campus community to insure that Longwood University is a welcoming environment to all students and…

Seeks to frame an intercultural dialogue with students that are collaborative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary.

Revised Transportation Policy and Information 2009

Beginning in August 2009, the Office will provide only arrivals (at the beginning of the term) and departures (end of the term) at no cost to the international Students.
