Macondo is the magical, natural and futuristic story of an imaginary town in the northern cost of Colombia, South América.  According to Melquíades, an alchemist and Gypsy wizard, Macondo was founded by the amusingly humorous Buendía family and lasted 100 hundred years of solitary life.

Tickets $15 for Students, Seniors and Children; $20 for adults.

We invite you to share in a festive evening of dance and music celebrating the Hispanic spirit of the season.

General Education Film Series (GEFS) will show the movie Temporada de Patos (Duck Season), Directed by Fernando Eimbcke, November 15 at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the LCVA.  Critics and audiences praise the film for its quirky charm, quick humor, and touching exploration of adolescence.  This film is co-sponsored by General Education and the LCVA.  En Spanish with English subtitles.

Duck Season offers a glimpse of the life of two fourteen-year-old boys in Mexico on what begins as an ordinary Sunday afternoon.  Flama and Moko have been best friends since they were kids. They have everything they need to survive yet another boring Sunday: an apartment without parents, videogames, porn magazines, soft drinks and pizza delivery.  But the electricity company, Rita, the neighbor, Ulises, a pizza deliveryman, eleven seconds, the Real Madrid-Manchester game, some chocolate brownies and a horrible painting of ducks, all combine to break the harmony of what promised to be a placid Sunday, and reveal issues such as the parents' divorce, loneliness, the confusion between adolescent love and friendship, as well as frustration in adult life. "Temporada de Patos" is a movie that shows that, when the lights go off, we can see the stars.  Rated R

"Hailing from Cuba, Argentina and Chile, the five members of this extraordinary band are now making their third US tour.  Solazo delivers a unique blend of Latin contemporary dance music and soulful ballads that appeal to all ages and cultures.  Their newest CD, "Mindful Journeys," is an exciting compilation of original music inspired by traditional styles borrowed from Spain, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Ecuador.
Layered with sensual Cuban rhythms and spiked with the unusual flavors of Andean sounds (panpipe, charango, and mandolin), the unique and artful arrangements move fluidly from flamenco to mambo within the course of a single song, creating a rare blend of Latin folk and dance music.
The concert, free and open to the public, will begin at 8 pm in Crawley Forum on the campus of Hampden-Sydney College.  This program is part of Hampden-Sydney's continuing commitment to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the Southside community."  (From the Farmville Herald, Oct. 21, 2005, page 9A)

This exhibition brings together 130 works of Mayan royal art, from stone
panels to jade masks and jewelry.  Most of the artifacts were created
from A.D. 650 to 800 in major cities, with an emphasis on recent
discoveries made in Palenque.  Most of the artifacts will be appearing
in the U.S. for the first time.

In addition to this rare collection, the gallery will premiere twenty
cubist works of Diego Rivera inspired by a recent gift of a little-known
still life, "No. 9, Nature Morte Espagnole."  As the first Rivera show
at the National Gallery, it features a selection of his work developed
between 1913 and 1915.
