Activities
Iota
Psi holds its initiation ceremony each semester.
On March 29, 2005 in the Grainger Language Lab, Dr. Geoffrey Orth,
serving as interim national secretary-treasurer of the organization, inducted
Longwood’s newest members Mr. William Plail, Lecturer in German, and rising
senior David Weber, into the Society.
About
15 students accompanied Dr. Orth and Mr. Plail to Hampden-Sydney College for
their Karneval celebration in late February 2005.
Students from the German program at Sweet Briar College also attended.
In addition to celebrating the German tradition, students learned about
Karneval in Cologne, Fasching in Basel, and Latin American dancing.
Each
year in late September or early October, Dr. Reynolds hosts German students at
his farm in Prospect for an Oktoberfest celebration.
Students enjoy sausage, sauerkraut, and German potato salad.
Afterwards they may participate in a game of croquet.
Hampden-Sydney German students are also usually invited.
Every year in April, Dr. Orth hosts German students at his cabin at Smith Mountain Lake for a weekend in which they only speak German. Students have the chance to go kayaking, play German monopoly, watch German films, and eat German food. If weather permits, students also enjoy a boat ride before returning to Longwood.
