Longwood University, in affiliation with the Centre International d'Etudes Françaises de l'Université Catholique de l'Ouest (Angers, France), is pleased to offer its Summer Institute for French Teachers 2005.  Participants will spend two weeks living with French families and attending classes, as well as visiting sites of cultural and historical significance.  Participants may earn three (3) or six (6) graduate credits.

Longwood University:

For the fifth year in a row, Longwood University has been ranked among the best by U.S. News & World Report. In its newly released 2003 survey of colleges and universities, U.S.News ranks Longwood as the 10th top public university--master's in the South.  U.S. News bases its rankings on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.  Longwood University was also named a "Best Buy" in America's 100 Best College Buys (1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000), a national publication which profiles the highest academically rated schools with the lowest annual costs.

Founded in 1839 in Farmville, Virginia, Longwood University is a coeducational, comprehensive state University offering programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees in a wide variety of subjects, including the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in Modern Languages Programs with concentration in Spanish, leading to the Master of Science in Education. Longwood University's Office of International Affairs currently sponsors 27 programs in 18 countries.

Accreditation:

Longwood University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Virginia State Board of Education.

Information about Angers

Gateway to the Loire Valley château region and capital of Anjou, Angers is a
medium-sized French city with vibrant museums, an 13th-century fortified
castle, and a hospitable population.  Located two hours from Paris via TGV,
Angers is situated halfway between Tours and Nantes.  Brittany, Normandy, and
the castels of the Loire are all within easy reach.  Home to the Ducs
d' Anjou, Angers was one of the major military and commercial centers of the
Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and currently houses the extraordinary,
14th-century Tapestry of the Apocalypse, the longest in the world.

Housing:

Participants will live with French families in Angers, where they will have three meals per day and enjoy interaction with native speakers, as well as the opportunity to meet other French people.  Our participants have cited the homestay as one of the best aspects of the program. Many of them keep in touch with their host family long after the program.

We sometimes receive inquiries from those who wish to arrange their own lodging.  Below are our policies for those who will not need the room and board for the Summer Institute for French Teachers:

1.  Participants who will not stay with host families arranged by the program must make arrangements to stay with native French speakers.  If the participant is a native French speaker, then this requirement is not necessary.  In all cases, the lodging arrangements must be such that there is opportunity to interact with French people on a daily basis.

2.  Participants who meet the conditions for the above stipulation will pay the standard program price according to their residency (Virginia resident or resident of other states), and the amount of the room and board will be refunded to them by the Centre International d'Etudes Françaises.

Requirements for Admission

Courses offered are graduate-level courses. Participants must hold a B.A. degree in French and should be teaching or planning to teach French.  Applicants who hold a B.A. degree in another discipline must have completed at least two upper-level undergraduate courses in French to be eligible. Nevertheless, participants at all levels of oral proficiency will be eligible. The goal of the Institute is to offer the opportunity to improve one's ability in all of the language skill areas.

Courses

You may choose one or two courses (three or six graduate credits).  Please be advised, however, that due to the short length of the program, those choosing to take two classes will be very busy, and may not have as great a chance to take advantage of the cultural opportunities offered by socializing with family members, etc.  This is a very intensive program, and those who would like to have a little free time should take only one of the classes.  Requirements for all classes include attendance and participation in the classes, participation in the cultural activities and visits, some readings and short essays, an exam, and a research style paper to be completed after the end of the program and mailed to Longwood University.  In some cases, you may receive materials to read before the start of the program.  Courses will be posted here soon, and detailed course syllabi will be available in April.

Cost

The cost of the program for 2005 is $2,300.00 for residents of Virginia (3 or 6 graduate credits) and for residents of other states taking 3 graduate credits.   For residents of other states who take 6 graduate credits, the cost is $3,00.00.  This cost may change due to currency fluctuations; updates will be posted on this site.
